Job Description
Job Purpose:
To supervise and develop teams of Commercial Underwriters to write profitable commercial insurance business to meet the Commercial strategy and business objectives. Ensure that Commercial Underwriting guidelines are set, monitored and managed to achieve the departmental goals and strategy. Support Commercial management and other senior Commercial technical staff in account management work that ensures achievement of Commercial growth and strategy.
Main Responsibilities:
- Manage a team of Commercial Underwriters to achieve the balance of account growth by meeting new business, renewal pricing and account quality objectives set in the corporate objectives.
- Ensure that underwriting guidelines and procedures are in place, followed, monitored and reviewed, to ensure the Commercial strategies, philosophies and objectives are achieved and planned for and regulatory requirements are met.
- Undertake appraisals, coaching, and recruitment of staff for the Commercial Underwriting teams to ensure capability is managed across the department to meet business needs. Ensure competency and succession planning for future capability is proactively managed.
- In conjunction with the Head of Commercial Underwriting Operations and Commercial Technical Training Specialist, ensure that effective technical training programmes for the Underwriters are identified on a rolling basis and actioned, and personally ensure competency is subsequently monitored and achieved.
- Manage the Commercial Underwriting teams to ensure development of profitable relationships with brokers and broking groups. Liaise with Business Account Executives, Business Relationship Managers, the Assistant Commercial Manager and the Commercial Manager where required on larger key accounts to ensure maximum impact for development.
- Deal with referrals outside the experience and/or authority of Commercial Underwriters in the underwriting teams. Referral work includes technical assessment of larger, more complex risks and the negotiation of suitable terms for new business, change in risk, claims and renewals, including placing of reinsurance in excess of standard treaty capacity.
- Undertake and support Commercial account management development work to ensure the Commercial strategy is achieved. Work includes operational developments and improvements, technical support and assistance with product development in conjunction with the Pricing and Product Development team and development and introduction of new and improved business distribution methods. The Senior Commercial Underwriter needs to have:-
- Excellent organisational skills to achieve the level of co-ordination required.
- The ability to be a skilful communicator, negotiator and relationship builder, with proven experience of these skills in a technical commercial insurance environment.
- Numerical proficiency sufficient to deal with expense evaluation and underwriting.
- Had in depth underwriting experience in property, pecuniary, and liability classes of insurance equally, and for all relevant classes across a wide variety of products and trades. In addition experience in Personal Accident, Goods in Transit and Fidelity Guarantee preferable.
- The ability to assess technical risk and make decisions at the highest level on all aspects of the company Commercial products within strategy and underwriting philosophy, and on cover outside of those products.
- The experience and ability to draft new wordings and endorsements.
- Good understanding of the regulatory environment for the industry and the Commercial insurance environment.
- Good supervisory, training and account development experience and skills, enabling the individual to be able to interpret the strategies required to achieve the objectives laid down in the plan and manage underwriting teams to deliver those objectives.
- Good keyboard skills, with knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel to intermediate level, and preferably Access and PowerPoint to a basic level.
