Interview Tips
from The CV Store
Before the interview:
- Following the confirmation of an interview, set some time aside to investigate the company – visiting the company in person, or searching for details through the Internet. Doing this will prevent any embarrassments in the interview where you could be asked questions about the company, or their industry in general
- Prepare some questions to ask at the interview. This will further demonstrate your interest in the position / company by showing the recruiter you’ve taken the time out to ascertain as much information as you could!
- Practise, practise practise! This may sound silly, but consider practising in front of a mirror – this will allow you to prepare your answers / questions. You might also be able to find recruitment companies in your area who are willing to perform dummy interviews with you – allowing you to brush up on your skills
On the day of the interview:
- Believe it or not, some people under-dress (or even over-dress) when attending an interview. Try to keep jewellery and perfume to a minimum. As with a CV, first impressions are the most important
- Take a pad and pen with you to the interview - this will give you the opportunity to make notes and allows you to keep track of any questions you are planning on asking
- Try to arrive around 15 minutes before your interview – this will allow you to get properly prepared
- Be aware of your body language throughout the interview - when shaking hands, make sure your grip is firm as this shows confidence
- When answering interview questions, avoid making negative comments about previous positions / companies – this will severely hurt any chances of progressing through the interview as the company will be looking to someone who is positive and enthusiastic
After the interview:
- Send a thank-you letter straight after interview. Not only does this help make you stand out from the crowd but it allows you to polish up on any details you may have overlooked in the interview
- Consider applying for more than one vacancy at a time as this helps to prevent you from feeling demoralised if you don't get one job.
